NAGA Guqin Event

The North American Guqin Association hold a special guqin event on Saturday, August 9th, 2003 primarily for NAGA members. It was intended for people who either already play the guqin but would like to expand their qin knowledge or meet more qin friends, or who were seriously interested in it and want to know how to select a suitable instrument. This event consisted of three parts: a workshop, a showcase of guqin products and a qin gathering (yaji).

1. The workshop covered the following topics:

- How to mount strings (using both the traditional method and the new tuning device)
- How to make tuning cords (rongkou)
- How to tie the "butterfly" knot (yingtou) at the end of each string
- How to evaluate the sound quality and workmanship of a qin
- Shapes of qins
- Types of wood used to make qins
- Types of strings
- Other practical issues.

2. guqin products showcase.

New guqins, books, CDs, instructional VCDs etc. from our sponsor http://www.beijingers.com was presented.

At least 10 guqins were available for participants to evaluate. These were of various makes, styles and types of wood, with different types of strings and of different levels of quality. Some were reproduction antiques (duanwen qin).

A large variety of guqin books, CDs and videos by various players also be on display.

3. Qin gathering (yaji).
