NAGA Upcoming Events This Summer The North American Guqin Association will present a series of guqin events in the Asian Art Museum during the summer of 2008 and invites Bay Area people to experience one of the oldest living traditional arts. These programs are co-presented with the Asian Art Museum and are made possible by LIVING CULTURES GRANTS from The Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA). If you are interested in our upcoming events, whether as an attendee or as a volunteer, and want to meet our NAGA officers and performers, please read on: 1. The Living Tradition of the Guqin Time: Saturdays and Sundays Noon¨C4:00pm Activities include: ? Listening to live performances of guqin masterpieces music from various Dynasties ? Demonstrations ? Discovering the guqin: instrument and musical notation ? Discussions with the performer Place: North Court 200 Larkin St. Tel: 415.581.3500 Time: Thursday, July 3, 2008 FREE with museum admission ($5 after 5 pm) Event summary Renowned guqin performer and scholar Wang Fei will guide the audience on a special musical journey to introduce Chinese culture and bring to life the sound of the sages. Not only will she play guqin masterpieces from different dynasties, she will also tell the stories behind the music and give her own commentary and insights to bring these ancient works to our modern society. This concert is part of the July MATCHA, a monthly fixture at the Asian Art Museum. Enjoy the spiritual music of the guqin. Try your hand at brush painting, stroll the galleries and special exhibitions, or simply enjoy a drink and hang out with friends. Place: Samsun Hall 200 Larkin St. Tel: 415.581.3500 3. Guqin Workshops Time: September 20, 21, 27, and 28, 2008 The hands-on workshops will cover guqin playing and performance technique, notation, history, tradition, theory, handbooks, repertory and a lot more. They will also give you an opportunity to experience other aspects of Chinese culture and tradition: philosophy, religion, opera, literature, calligraphy, painting, tea, food etc. At the end of the workshops you will make some music and have an understanding of guqin music and a broad appreciation of Chinese culture. These classes are open to anybody who would like to know more about the guqin. Classes will be interactive, consisting of lectures, audio-visual sessions, demonstrations and discussions.
