NAGA Guqin Events for April 2005

Dear qin friends,

On Sunday, April 17th, there will be a full day of qin events. The master class session will include spring theme guqin activities, and at the yaji students of the NAGA Introduction to the Guqin course will demonstrate what they have learned during their first month of qin study.

1.    The fourth guqin master class

2.    Dinner gathering

3.    Guqin yaji

The fourth guqin master class

NAGA director Wang Fei will continue the course on guqin learning and technique. Topics will include:

1.    Schools of qin music (qinpai) part 2.

2.    Guqin Masters ¨C Li Xiangting Part 2. We will continue reading, watching and listening to his works, including the CCTV show in which he was interviewed. A DVD of this program was provided by Dr. Sanford Tom. The program tells the fascinating story of how Professor Li began to learn the guqin. Actually how Dr. Tom recorded this DVD also is a very interesting story. Ms. Wang will talk about these stories behind them. Please see the list of Professor Li Xiangting's recordings prepared by master class assistant Julian Joseph.

3.    Spring theme activity. We shall do some creative scholarly activities to enhance your enjoyment of the beauty of spring and enable you to experience something of the flavor of the yajis of ancient times. Please see spring theme details at http://www.chineseculture.net/guqin/newsletters/masterclass/0504springtheme.htm

4.    Guqin Masterpieces ¨C Jiu Kuang. A lot of different versions of Jiu Kuang have been recorded. You will get a feel for what dapu is and the differences between various musicians' interpretations and styles. Please see  list of recordings of Jiu Kuang prepared by master class assistant Julian Joseph.

5.    How to play Jiu Kuang. Every participant who so wishes will have the opportunity to play and get advice.

6.    There are many ancient stories and legends associated with the guqin. We will introduce some of these.

7.    Review of basic right and left hand techniques.

This master class will be held on Sunday, April 17th from 2pm to 5pm. The cost is $60 for people who are not currently enrolled in Wang Fei's private class, payable either in advance online (preferably), in which case the address will be given upon receipt of your payment, or at the door (cash only). If you want to pay at the door please email info@guqin.org for the address and directions). The class will take place in the Fremont area.

Please register now

These classes are open to all who are interested in finding out more about the guqin. For those currently learning to play from Ms. Wang Fei, they are an important component of the curriculum. The classes also provide necessary foundation knowledge before you learn to play from a reputable guqin teacher, as they are often very selective about which students they will teach.

Our master classes are held once a month. Please see details at http://www.chineseculture.net/guqin/newsletters/guqinmasterclass.htm

Places are limited, so please register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Dinner gathering

After the class we shall have dinner at a very fine Chinese restaurant. Qin lovers and food lovers can meet informally.

The Bay area is very diverse and we are fortunate to have discovered many different cuisines there. For Chinese food alone, there are numerous good authentic restaurants. For all of you food and qin lovers in the Bay area, this is a great opportunity to meet other qin and food friends! Bring your friends along too!

Students of the NAGA Introduction to the Guqin course will demonstrate their progress after their first month of qin study.
